Sunday, July 7-Friday, July 12: University of
Hawai’i, Mānoa
Day 1:
² After collecting baggage, pile in our van and head to Dixie’s Grill for lunch.
² Check
into housing at UH Mānoa. Time to unpack, settle in, and relax.
² Dinner
at Hale Aloha Café, included dinning service.
Day 2:
² Breakfast
at Hale Aloha Café. (bring “take-out” lunch or plan to try dim sum in
Chinatown)
² Depart at 8:15am.
v 9:15-10:15:
I’olani Palace: Our educator, Keahe will serve as docent for a guided tour where Hawai’i’s last queen was imprisoned.
v 10:30-12:30:
King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center: We will walk across the street to the King Kam Center to learn about
the political history of Hawai’i at the site where the overthrow of the
Hawaiian Monarchy took place.
v Chinatown:
Remainder of the afternoon is free
time to explore the many wonders of Honolulu’s Chinatown. Recommendations for
lunch and sites to see will be provided.
² Return
to campus.
² Dinner
at Hale Aloha Café.
Day 3:
² Breakfast
at Hale Aloha Café.
² Return
to Frear Hall, clean up, and have lunch.
² Depart at 12:45
and walk to Campus tour 1:00-2:30.
² Dinner
at Hale Aloha Café.
Day 4:
² Breakfast
at Hale Aloha Café. Grab “take-out” lunch.
² 90-minute
educational session led by Anne Rosa, Marine Preservation Education Specialist.
² Descend
to the beach for 3 hours to have lunch, snorkel, and enjoy the beach.
² Drive
back to housing along the coastal scenic route.
² Stop
at Nu’uanu Pali Lookout to learn
about the epic battle that resulted in Kamehameha as the first king of the
Hawaiian Islands.
² Dinner
at Hale Aloha Café.
Day 5:
² Breakfast
at Hale Aloha Café. Grab “take-out” lunch.
² Return
to dorms and pack in preparation for move to North Shore.
² Depart at 4:00pm
for Kamehameha Canoe Club 4:30-6:30:
Students will learn about Hawaiian tradition of canoeing and the cultural
revival of this tradition.
² Dinner
at Hale Aloha Café.
Friday, July 12-Wedneday, July 17: Backpacker’s
Hawai’i, North Shore
Day 6:
² Breakfast
at Hale Aloha Café.
² Check
out of dorm accommodations and travel to Backpacker’s
Hawai’i on the North Shore.
² Afternoon/evening:
time to settle in, get groceries, check out the beaches, enjoy food trucks, and
watch the sunset.
Day 7:
² Breakfast
on own.
² 9am-11am:
volunteer at the park
² 11am-12pm
rest and have lunch
² 12pm-2/3pm:
guided tour of the park, ending with a swim at Waimea Falls.
² Return
to hostel.
² Afternoon/evening:
enjoy beaches, food trucks, and watch the sunset.
Day 8:
² Breakfast
on own.
² Depart at 8:00am
for Kualoa Nature Preserve 9:00am-1:00:
Ahupua’a Environmental Exploration and Outdoor Environmental Lab
² Return
to hostel to enjoy beaches, food trucks, and sunset.
Day 9:
² Breakfast
on own. Bring snacks and lunch!
² Lunch
on the beach.
² 11:30-2:00pm
outreach as honu guardians on the beach.
² Return
to hostel to enjoy beaches, food trucks, and sunset.
Day 10:
² Breakfast
on own.
² Depart at 10:00am
for Old Sugar Mill to learn about
the history of and processes involved in growing, harvesting, and prepping both
coffee and chocolate. Enjoy a tasting of coffee, chocolate, and macadamia nuts.
Great time for souvenir shopping!
² Depart Old Sugar
Mill at 12:30pm and head to Hale’iwaTown. Free time for lunch at one of the famous food trucks, shave ice, and
checking out local artisans.
² Return
to hostel: Time to pack.
Day 11: Depart for Honolulu International Airport 8am
